How It All Began

The Story Behind Living Traditions

Our journey started in Iznik, Turkey, where we combined business with purpose, crafting products that support marginalized individuals.

Manfred (from Germany) and Debrah (from Canada) have been involved in business since they arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1999. Over time, they developed strong relationships with locals and artisans in nearby Nicaea, a town historically known for its cultural and artistic heritage and now called Iznik.

Famous for its exquisite ceramic art, Iznik is also a popular weekend retreat for city dwellers seeking the natural beauty of Iznik Lake and its surrounding countryside.

In 2011, Manfred and Debrah purchased a small home and moved to Iznik. Shortly after, they witnessed the arrival of the first Syrian refugees seeking work. Inspired to make a difference, they began praying and planning for a business venture that could benefit both the local community and the refugees.

In 2016, they launched a business creating olive wood products, repurposing wood from olive trees that were being removed to make way for new residential developments, roads, and more profitable fruit plantations.

Living Traditions has grown steadily since its inception. In 2020, it became a provisional member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) and achieved Guaranteed Membership in 2023. Today, the business collaborates with staff and external producers from Syrian and other minority backgrounds, alongside locals, to craft high-quality products.

Beyond daily operations, the team gathers weekly to discuss orders, share ideas, solve problems, and listen to each other's needs. These meetings strengthen team spirit and reaffirm their commitment to Fair Trade values.

Manfred and Debrah's vision for Living Traditions is to see the business thrive, to support their employees in developing character and skills, and to expand their positive impact on the local community by fostering cooperation with other businesses and artisans.

In 2026 the Syrian refugees left to go back to their home country. Manfred and Debrah handed the business over to two local friends. One of them, Ferhat is now the manager of the shop. M&D stay involved and give support from the background. For the time being we asked the WFTO to put the membership on hold until a new concept for working with disadvantaged local people is in place.

Our town is becoming more and more a tourist destination due to the visit of Pope Leo XIV at the occasion of the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea. This creates opportunities for new products and activities. We try to use this momemtum to serve both, the foreign pilgrims and the local population in creative ways.
